Applying Utilitarianism to Aboriginal Child Removal Policies

Doug Gavinsson (MU):

Abstract:

For utilitarian theories the morality of actions is determined by the pleasures and pains within some specified understanding of the consequences of those actions.  The broad area of my research is the evaluation of the morality of Auber Octavius Neville's implementation of Aboriginal child removal policies in Western Australia in the 1900's, using utilitarian approaches.  This paper sets out some of the reasons for embarking on this project and clarifies the foundation upon which the analysis of the policy will be based.  The final outcome of the project will depend largely on historical research which is still in progress, however, in the dissertation preliminary I will point out some of the implications of applying utilitarian approaches to the child removal policies.
