Independent Study Contracts in Philosophy

If you wish to develop a special interest in a topic that is not covered by our units or you want to study in depth a special aspect of a topic, approach a member of staff and discuss it with him/her with a view to submitting an application to take an independent study contract (ISC).

In case you prefer having an ISC credited towards your major in Philosophy rather than as a general elective, this must be approved by the Program Committee. Please contact the Faculty Student Administration, Education and Humanities Building E/H 2.002, or send them an e-mail.

Application forms, along with a booklet explaining independent study contracts, are available from the Faculty Student Administration, Education and Humanities Building E/H 2.002.

Applications must be submitted AT LEAST FOUR WEEKS PRIOR to the start of the semester in which the contract is to be undertaken.

Double Majors

A feature of enrolment at Murdoch, and one commonly considered by students, is enrolment in two majors at the same time. This is called a double major enrolment. If you are considering this or want more information, then you should read Study at Murdoch: a General Guide in the Murdoch University Handbook or come and see Faculty Student Administration staff in EH2.002 so your draft looks good! The following points are important

A feature of enrolment at Murdoch, and one commonly considered by students, is enrolment in two programmes at the same time. This is called a double major enrolment. If you are considering this or want more information, then you should read the section on 'Enrolment in Program' under "Undergraduate Studies" in the Murdoch University Handbook and see your Division Executive Officer. The following points are important:

If you are considering a double programme enrolment you should see your Division Executive Officer. She or he will give you an outline of what is involved, and ask you to draw up a tentative three (or more) year schedule of units. This schedule will then be discussed in detail at a second meeting (or by correspondence for external students). This two stage process is designed to make sure that you have looked carefully at the programme structures and the units available, and to ensure that you complete the requirements of both programmes in the minimum time.

Minors

In addition to the majors offered by each discipline, Murdoch also offers a number of separate Minors. These Minors allow you to gain credit for study of a structured group of units in a field other than your Major(s), without having to enrol in a further major field.

If you would like more information on this enrolment opportunity, you should consult the Murdoch University Handbook and see the Faculty Student Administration staff.

Non-philosophy majors may be interested in the philosophy program's Philosophy Minor and/or Ethics Minor.

Units for credit from UWA and Curtin:

Special arrangements have been made to facilitate University cross-institutional enrolments with UWA and Curtin University, some of whose units are complementary to those offered in the Philosophy Program at Murdoch.

Murdoch Philosophy students can obtain no more than 8 points from UWA or Curtin toward the 24 points to be obtained from Part II Required units.

Students intending to take a UWA or Curtin unit are responsible for enrolling at that institution, and must first complete the relevant form and obtain the permission of the Program Chair.

Accreditation Procedures:

Units taken at other institutions before enrolment at Murdoch:

Units taken towards a degree at any other recognised tertiary institution in Australia within the last 10 years may receive credit towards a Murdoch degree, up to a maximum of 48 points. If you have completed a recognised degree and are enrolling in Philosophy for a second degree, you may receive 36 points credit on the basis of your previous studies. Lesser amounts of credit may apply for units taken elsewhere towards a diploma or teacher's certificate. Further information on unit accreditation can be obtained from the Advanced Standing web site.

Units taken at other institutions while you are enrolled at Murdoch:

You must seek prior approval before you enrol in units at other tertiary institutions for credit as Program Electives. You should consult the Program Chair.

Academic Advising:

Please do not hesitate to consult the Program Chair or any member of the Program Staff on any matter of relevance to your study, such as choice of units, changing enrolment, considering whether to withdraw from a unit, taking a break in your university studies, resuming later, preparing to do an Honours degree, or continuing your studies elsewhere.

To make an appointment to see any member of the Philosophy staff, contact him or her by phone or email, as indicated on her or his biography page on this site.
