This unit deals with central themes in contemporary philosophy of language; in both the analytic and phenomenological traditions. Key questions addressed include: How do we make ‘sense' of the world? How do we understand others? What counts as a language? Is ‘language' necessary to make the world ‘meaningful' for us? What is the relation between thinking, talking and hearing? Can we think without words? What is the relation between language and reality? How is it possible to understand what someone else says?

2.5 hours per week

Nil. This unit is intended to be accessible to students from all disciplines

Assessment

Internal mode: Tutorial participation and presentation, 2 essays.
